3 Things You Can’t Put in a Rental Dumpster

If you’re cleaning out a home or business and decide you might want to rent a dumpster, keep in mind there are things that can’t go in the rental dumpster. This is usually because the items aren’t accepted by the municipality where the dumpster will be emptied. Before you rent a dumpster, make sure to look at what needs disposing of before choosing the size dumpster.
Although you may have paint that you no longer need, you can’t just throw it in a dumpster. There is a way around this problem. Simply open the can and let it dry. Once the paint has dried, it can be disposed of. If there is too much in the can to dry, pour it in layers on cardboard to dry. If you do have paint that’s still good to use, ask your local Habitat for Humanity if they are currently taking paint donations.
2. Some Car Part & Most Automotive Fluids
Oil, antifreeze and other automotive fluids have two issues. First, they may be flammable and second, they may contaminate ground water. Few car parts are accepted because they often contain hazardous fluids. Tires are also on the banned list, although some municipalities will allow them separately. Car batteries should be taken to an automotive parts store for proper disposal. The best thing to do with auto parts, fluids and tires is call a local mechanic and see if they can properly dispose of the items for you. Keep in mind there may be a fee for them to handle the items.
The list of banned chemicals is long and includes solvents, pesticides, cleaning products and more. Although they may be considered safe when diluted or used occasionally, many are not safe to dispose of in large quantities. If you are unsure about how to dispose of any no longer needed chemical, contact your local municipality and ask if they accept it anywhere.
Every dumpster rental company has their own list of other banned items. If you are renovating a kitchen and have lots of appliances, be sure to ask about any regulations regarding their disposal.
